Pontardawe Arts Centre
Thu 19 Oct
A completely immersive Kathakali experience is being brought to Pontardawe Arts Centre by the Kala Chethena company. The sacred southern Indian art of Kathakali is unique, the make-up is as important as the performers in recreating this ancient art form. The company was, in fact, founded 30 years ago by a make-up artist and an actor. So, before this performance takes place there is a free workshop on Kathakali stage art. The Guinness World Record artists will demonstrate how they create their three-dimensional work, all from rice paste and paper. These practices have gone on for over 300 years as performers have continued to tell the eternal tale of good against evil.
Kathakali is a beautiful mix of bright colour and subtle movement. The extravagant look of the performers is balanced perfectly with the integral music and devotional dance. Bridging any language barriers, Kathakali is a timeless example of how to appreciate different cultures and religions through the arts. Set in Kerala, these epic Hindu stories from India preserve a heritage that has been passed down through the generations and across communities for centuries. Thankfully, there are performers like Kala Chethena Kathakali Company sharing it with us, this month, in Pontardawe.
