Sherman Theatre, Cardiff

Osama Bin Laden is not a person that can be discussed without controversy, so for Knaïve Theatre to create a play about his life is no easy ride. However, the solo performance with Sam Redway as Bin Laden, without any false beard or gimmicks, accompanied by tea and biscuits, humanises the monster we’ve all come to tragically know.
Redway portrays the mind behind Al Qaeda, from his early years up until the 9/11 attacks that changed the world forever. The play aims to generate conversation about taboo subjects such as Bin Laden; it questions all the biased information that clogs the internet, and instead brings Bin Laden back to reality. The audience learn about how he began as a man who had concerns like the rest of us, about the safety of his family, and how the young boy became the one of the most infamous terrorists to ever walk the earth.
Whilst there are a few laughs throughout, this is not a tongue-in-cheek comedy sketch we have all come to expect when the master orator is portrayed. Instead, it creates a space for a dialogue to form of how powerful words are, and how a regular man’s views changed the world.
