Torch Theatre, Milford Haven
Thurs 19 May
The UK’s leading full masked theatre company VAMOS is back with another production after last year’s triumphant production Nursing Lives touring both nationally and internationally. This year, the company visit the swinging sixties in their latest production The Best Thing, which explores themes of sexual revolution and heartbreak. Although technically a comedy, the narrative is full of pathos. The production takes its name from the extreme reality of teenage mothers in 1960s Britain, where many vulnerable young women were coerced into giving up their babies up for adoption because it was “the best thing”. While we wait for an outcome from the Movement for an Adoption Apology campaign, this exploration of one girl’s life opens our eyes to the dark side of the free love decade. The Best Thing’s wordless narrative follows 17 year old Susan, pining for her life to begin. When our protagonist Susan accidentally becomes pregnant, the audience are taken on a 50 year journey with the child Susan is made to give up. With heart wrenching poetic scenes, this is an innovative and often daring production about a period of history that often gets overlooked, delivered in a creative way. The play can be accessed by both hearing and deaf audiences alike.
