Plonked right outside St David’s 2 sits The Stable, the company’s first foray into the Welsh market. What strikes the diner first is the oddly specific selection of food and drink on sale: a melange of pizza, pies and cider. Upon arrival, we were quickly seated by smiley staff. Well benched really, they didn’t have seats, so I was risking exposing my reviewer’s rump to other diners. It was however a cosy atmosphere, and even on a weeknight people were flocking to the cosy restaurant for after work drinks and food.
Having settled in nicely, I though it time to order from the bar, where I nearly fainted when faced with a huge choice of cider and perry to choose from. Luckily helpful bar staff were there to assist. I start with a Black Rat Perry, which was beautifully sweet and strong. I then order a crispy crust Longhorn Jim pizza, with Longhorn ground beef, local chorizo, mushrooms, and smoked ham. My dining partner orders a Lamb Bam Boogie pie, featuring lamb, rosemary, garlic and honey. Both were enjoyable; good warming soul food for a rainy day. This was followed up by a baked apple and ginger cheesecake and a Nutella Pizza Pudding. Once again, the cheesecake was enjoyable, but the ‘pizza pudding’ was little more than a crispy crepe with Nutella poured over it.
The food served is great for a post-work soul comforting treat, but The Stable’s true forte lies in its selection of cider, which is a collection unparalleled in the city.
