Home Alone with queasy violence, this horror-comedy provides an antidote to anyone wanting to escape a saccharine Christmas with its macabre twists and turns. Luke (Levi Miller) is a twelve-year-old left with regular babysitter Ashley (Olivia DeJonge), when parents Deandra (Virginia Madsen) and Robert (the ever-droll Patrick Warburton) go out for a Christmas party. Luke has decided he will declare his love for his babysitter that night, but then someone appears to break in. To say more would be to spoil some nasty surprises; suffice to say nothing is as it seems as the death toll rises and cartoonish-but-gory violence escalates. Veering from slapstick comedy to chilling malevolence, Better Watch Out succeeds thanks to Miller’s enjoyable central turn and DeJonge’s attempts to be a grown up in control. More naughty than nice.
