WIN TICKETS TO THE OLD CURIOSITY SHOP

Win a pair of tickets to see The Old Curiosity Shop at Barry Memorial Theatre on Fri 24 Sept.

To enter, just email your name, address and contact number to competitions@buzzmag.co.uk by  Mon 20 Sept along with your answer to this question:

What is the name of the author of the novel upon which The Old Curiosity Shop is based?

Here is the stage preview of The Old Curiosity Shop from the September issue of Buzz:

This September, the Northumberland Theatre Company will take you on a hilarious and grotesque journey. Dickens’ classic novel, The Old Curiosity Shop, it would seem, is not about a shop of odds and ends at all but about the struggle of a young girl and her grandfather to escape their various demons. At the Barry Memorial Hall and Theatre, Little Nell and her gambling addict grandfather embark on a flight from their enemies and a desperate search for a safe haven from poverty.

The Old Curiosity Shop is praised as an example of Dickens at his best, and like all of the writer’s good novels, this story is plagued by some classically evil bad guys. Quilp and the crooked lawyer Brass dog the steps of the main characters throughout the play, along with the mysterious Single Gentleman. This innovative adaptation of the classic even has an interesting twist; to comment on the struggle between good and evil in the novel the same actor plays both Nell and Quilp.

The Old Curiosity Shop promises to be a brilliant performance sporting a whole host of sinister and jovial characters who arrive to assist and to disrupt Nell and her grandfather on their way, the most comic of these being Dick Swiveller and his Marchioness.

Those familiar with the novel should know not to hold out for a happy ending. Dickens is as cruel as he is brilliant and {The Old Curiosity Shop} contains enough ups and downs to keep the audience on the edge of their seat. This show promises to be a great rendition of a classic British masterpiece with a few innovative new twists thrown in for good measure. What could be better than to spend an evening travelling the length and breadth of the country with the unfortunate Nell and her eccentric grandfather? Or perhaps you’d rather follow the footsteps of the dreaded Quilp. Either way you can be certain that you’re in for a wild ride.
