Mike Perry’s major new solo exhibition, inspired by 1960s/70s minimalism, is a response to the significantly pressing issue of the vulnerability of the environment. Specifically, the Wales-based artist has been looking at the stress humanity puts on the environment, and the detrimental effect our activity has on nature and its ability to survive. He has also been investigating the fragility of our eco-system and whether it is still salvageable, or whether the footprint of humanity has trodden too hard.
Land/Sea has been created to act as an expansion on his wider series of art Wet Desserts, where Perry is investigating how monocultural land use and over-intensive cultivation has harmful consequences for the earth. Works from Perry’s Môr Plastig series, in which he has photographed and collected waste which has littered the beaches of West Wales, such as bottles, shoes and packaging, will also feature along the photographs in the Land/Sea collection.
Perry hopes that by avoiding the traditional campaigning rhetoric of environmental documentary, in favour of just showing his collections, that people may be able to envision more clearly what they could be leaving for future generations, after what has already been left for them.
